Rome became a republic in 509 BC. In 509 BC Romans created a new structure of government, The Republic. The Roman republic all started when the roman overran the Etruscan leader. Etruscan had controlled Romans for hundreds of years. They changed the government so that the citizens of Rome were allowed to select the person to rule all of Rome. The citizens of Rome seperated themselves from non-citizens and slaves by wearing a toga.
Story of Romulus and RemusAccording to the Legends of Ancient Rome, Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of Mars and the god's of war. The two were left in a basket on the Tiber River by a king of nearby Alba Longa and rescued by a female wolf, the twins lived to overcome the king and found their own city on the river’s banks in 753 B.C. After killing his brother, Romulus became the first king of Rome.
